What is Learn the Basics and who is it for?

Our group sessions are tailored for anyone who wants to climb safely in the roped climbing, auto belay, and bouldering areas of Summit Up. You will be taught all the necessary skills, except for lead climbing.

In addition, you'll have the opportunity to meet with other climbers who are also learning the ropes.

What will the session involve?

Join a small group of six learner climbers for two hours per session and learn everything necessary to become an independent climber at Summit Up. Each week, the instructor will tailor the course to focus on a different learning outcome. In addition to gaining essential knowledge, you will also receive basic coaching on climbing movement and technique.

After mastering the necessary skills, you can enroll in a further course called Improvers Coaching, which is on the same evening.
All equipment is included in the course fee.

Course schedule and requirements

Our course consists of three 2-hour weekly sessions, on Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

A new course will commence on the first Tuesday of each month. To get the most out of the program, attendees are required to participate in all three sessions.

Learn the Basics FAQ

Who is Learn the Basics course suitable for?

Our group sessions are tailored for anyone who wants to climb safely in the roped climbing, auto belay, and bouldering areas of Summit Up. You will be taught all the necessary skills, except for lead climbing.

What is included in the session?

During the session your friendly, experienced instructor will cover the skills required to climb unsupervised at the centre. This includes safe use of the bouldering area, fitting a harness, attaching the rope with a suitable knot, how to belay (safeguard) a climber and use of the auto belays.

Also included is use of all hire equipment during the session.

When is the course avalaible? Do I need to pre-book?

Our course consists of three 2-hour weekly sessions, every Tuesday evening from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm. The first course will begin on Tuesday, January 9th, and a new course will commence on the first Tuesday of each month. To get the most out of the program, attendees are required to participate in all three sessions.

Pre-booking is essential. Please note that we require at least 2 people to book the course to enable it to run. Should you be the only person to book on, you will be given 48 hours notice of any cancellation.

To book please call the centre on 0161 820 8750

What should I wear?

Please wear comfortable clothing and trainers. Climbing shoes can be provided on your session as required.

Open toed shoes, flip flops, boots, crocs or heels are not permitted in the climbing arena.

Long hair must be tied back and all loose jewellery, hats or hooded tops must be removed prior to climbing for safety reasons.

Do I need to bring any equipment with me?

All necessary equipment is provided by us and there are no additional hire fees for this.

However if you are coming to this roped climbing induction having done some bouldering and owning your own climbing shoes or chalk bag feel free to bring them along.

Do you have lockers?

Yes, we have small lockers available by our reception that are free to use. They are big enough for a coat or a small bag.

As loose jewellery can't be worn whilst climbing we would recommend leaving it at home. Alternatively it can be left in these lockers at your own risk.

Are spectators permitted on the sessions?

We have ample seating where spectators can watch the action and have a brew.

However please be aware that for safety reasons spectators may not be able to follow participants into the climbing areas.
