Climbing Wall Instructor

The Climbing Wall Instructor qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to supervise climbers on purpose built artificial climbing walls and boulders.

It is ideal for people who work at climbing walls or at venues with permanent or mobile climbing towers.

Prior to the training you should have some experience of climbing and meet the minimum experience criteria set by mountain training and have registered with them for the CWI scheme.

There is a 2-day training course following which candidates undertake a consolidation period and must log further experience climbing and assisting with groups.

The average candidate will take between 6 and 12 months to complete this. Once they have met or exceeded the minimum experience criteria set by Mountain Training they can then attend the 1 day assessment course.

The Climbing Wall Instructor qualification does not include the skills and techniques required to teach lead climbing.

Training Courses are £160 and are running on Feb 28th-29th, Apr 20th-21st (weekend), July 10th-11th, Sep 3rd-4th and Nov 27th-28th.

Assessments are £110 on 7th Mar, 11th May, 5th Sep and 26th Nov

Rock Climbing Instructor

This qualification is all about taking people climbing and abseiling on single pitch crags and artificial structures.

Whether you're a parent, a volunteer or an outdoor centre instructor, the Rock Climbing Instructor qualification trains and assesses experienced rock climbers to instruct climbing.

Prior to the training you should have experience of climbing outdoors on real rock including leading on leader placed protection and meet the minimum experience criteria set by mountain training and have registered with them for the RCI scheme. If you already hold the Climbing Wall Instructor award you will only need to do the 2 day course if not you will need to do the full 3 day course which includes one day at the wall.

Following which candidates undertake a consolidation period and must log further experience climbing and assisting with groups on real rock.

The average candidate will take between 6 months and 2 years to complete this. Once they have met or exceeded the minimum experience criteria set by Mountain Training they can then attend the 2 day assessment course.

The Rock Climbing Instructor qualification does not include the skills and techniques required to teach lead climbing.

2 Day training costs £180 and you must hold CWI award. The dates are:
Mar 9-10

3 Day training costs £250 and the dates are: Sep 17-19

The assessment costs £180 and the dates are: Apr 13-14,
Aug 28-29

Climbing Wall Development instructor

The Climbing Wall Development Instructor qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to develop climbers beyond the basic skills.

This includes teaching lead climbing on indoor or outdoor artificial climbing walls and structures with fixed protection.

It builds on the skills gained through either the Climbing Wall Instructor or Rock Climbing Instructor qualifications, one of which must be held in order to access the scheme.

Prior to the training you should have experience further experience of teaching climbing gained following your CWI or RCI assessment and meet the minimum experience criteria set by mountain training and have registered with them for the CWDI scheme.

There is a one day training course. Following which candidates undertake a consolidation period and must log further experience climbing and assisting with groups on real rock.

The average candidate will take between 6 and 12 months to complete this. Once they have met or exceeded the minimum experience criteria set by Mountain Training they can then attend the 1 day assessment course.
